چکیده

By S. TEJUJA Reproductive Biology Research Unit Department of Physiology All-India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi. The increasing use of the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) as a method family planninghas demonstrated its popularity not only in India but also in other countries throughout theworld. This has, in its turn simulated considerable research on its biological effects both in experimental animals as well as in the human. It has been shown that these devices have an antifertility effect in practically all the species that have been tested, although the stage of reproductiveprocess influenced differs from species to species. These differences noted in its mode of action may be as a result of difference in the anatomial conguration among various species, or asa result of marked variation in size shape and composition of the devices used. In the human, IUeD'S are generally composed of stainless steel or mixture of polythylene and barium sulphate. Various shapes that have been used are loops, coils, bows, rings of sizes which fill the uterine cavity without applying undue lateral pressure to the uterine walls. In the large domestic animals spirals of polythylene have been used. In the rodents and rabbits, threads of silk or nylon were used in earlier experimental work.

Contraceptive mechanism of IUDs.

The mode of action of intra-uterine devices (IUDs) continues to be a subject for speculation. It was Pincus (1964) who, on the basis of original experiments, first conceived the idea of hyperoestrogenism as the probable cause of the antifertility effect of IUDs. Various workers (Vorys, De Neef, Boutselis, Dettman, Scott, Stevens & Besch, 1964; Sammour, Iskander & Rifai, 1967; Bengtsson & Moawad...

Magnetic resonance imaging appearances of the Mirena and GyneFix intra-uterine contraceptive devices: a report of two cases.

We report here two cases which illustrate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance of the Mirena levonorgestrel releasing intra-uterine system and the GyneFix copper intra-uterine contraceptive implant. The MRI appearance of these devices has not to our knowledge been reported to date, and as increasing numbers of women choose to use these devices for treatment of gynaecological conditio...

Intra-uterine implant (GyneFix) lost via intestinal route?

Uterine perforation has long been regarded as a complication of the insertion of an intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUD). The development of modern devices with sophisticated insertion systems as well as advanced training requirements seeks to minimise the risk of adverse insertion incidents for women choosing intra-uterine contraception. This case report highlights the continuing need for ...

Practical Advice for Emergency IUD Contraception in Young Women

Too few women are aware of the very high efficacy of intrauterine copper devices (IUDs) to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. Women who frequently engage in unprotected intercourse or seek emergency contraception (EC) are at high risk of unplanned pregnancy and possible abortion. It is therefore important that these women receive precise and accurate information about intrauterine...

Ultrasonography: a diagnostic choice to localise intra uterine contraceptive devices

Background: Intrauterine devices are important method of contraception. They are more effective than oral contraceptives. They are also reversible forms of contraception. They provide contraception for years. Sonography is very useful in localization of intra uterine contraceptive devices.
